Sides and Salads Recipes - Broccoli with Sesame Seeds Recipe

Ingredients

  • 225g/8oz purple-sprouting broccoli

  • 15ml/1 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 15ml/1 tbsp soy sauce

  • 15ml/1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

  • salt and ground black pepper

Serves 2


Method:

  1. Using a sharp knife, cut off and discard any thick stems from the broccoli and cut the broccoli into long, thin florets. Stems that are young and tender can be sliced into rounds.

  2. Remove any bruised or discolored portions of the stem along with any florets that are no longer firm and tightly curled.

  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan and add the broccoli. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes, or until tender, adding a splash of water if the pan becomes too dry.

  4. Mix the soy sauce with the sesame seeds, then season with salt and ground black pepper. Add to the broccoli, toss to combine and serve immediately.

Note: This simple treatment is ideal for broccoli and other brassicas, including Brussels sprouts. Adding a sprinkling of toasted sesame seeds to give extra crunch is an inspired touch, and there are a number of other easy ways to vary the recipe according to taste.
