Asian Meats Recipes - Indonesian Stewed Meat (Semur Daging) Recipe

Ingredients

  • cooking oil

  • 2 onions (sliced)

  • 3 cloves garlic (crushed)

  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger root

  • 1lb. (500 g.) round steak (cut into bite-sized cubes)

  • 3 bunga cengkih/cloves (ground)

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black peppercorns

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • hot water to cover

Seasoning Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon kicap manis/dark soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon tamarind juice

  • 1 teaspoon gula Jawa/palm sugar

  • 2 tablespoons kicap asin/light soy sauce

Serves 4


Method:

  1. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a pan. Stir-fry onions till soft.

  2. Add garlic and ginger. Stir-fry 3 minutes longer.

  3. Put in beef and fry till color changes.

  4. Pour in hot water to cover, add remaining ingredients, and seasoning ingredients. Bring to the boil.

  5. Lower heat and simmer covered, till meat is tender and gravy thickened.

  6. Remove from heat and serve with plain boiled white rice.
