Asian Rice, Noodles and Snacks Recipes - Indonesian Steamed Noodle Packs (Orem Orem Istimewa) Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1lb. (500 g.) dried egg noodles

  • boiling salted water

  • 5 eggs

  • 1 1/2 cups thick santan/thick coconut milk

  • salt, pepper & monosodium glutamate to taste

  • 1/2 lb. (250 g.) minced meat

  • 2 carrots (sliced into thin rounds)

  • 2 sprigs daun sup/Chinese celery (finely sliced)

  • banana leaves (to wrap; steamed)

  • 3 oz. (90 g.) lettuce leaves

  • 2 red tomatoes (cut into wedges)

  • tomato, chili, soy sauce (to accompany)

Makes 15-20


Method:

  1. Cook noodles in the salted water till just tender. Drain well.

  2. Break 3 eggs into the coconut milk. Season mixture to taste, then beat lightly.

  3. Add noodles and mix well. Keep aside.

  4. Beat remaining eggs. Mix in minced meat, carrots and Chinese celery. Season to taste.

  5. Divide noodle-mixture among banana leaves. Top with equal portions of meat-mixture. Wrap up and secure ends with toothpicks.

  6. Steam for 1/2 hour, or till firm and done.

  7. To serve. Unwrap packs and arrange on a plate lined with lettuce leaves. Garnish with tomatoes and serve with sauces.
