Asian Salad Recipes - Singaporean Hot and Sour Cabbage Salad (Suan La Pai Chai) Recipe

Ingredients

  • 450g (1lb) white cabbage

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 2 large dried red chilies, roughly chopped

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce

  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Serves 4


Method

  1. Cut the cabbage leaves into small pieces about 2.5x1cm (1x 1/2in).

  2. Heat the oil in a wok or frying pan and fry the chilies briefly. Add the cabbage and stir-fry for 2 minutes.

  3. Add the salt and sugar, and stir-fry for 1 minute more. Add the soy sauce, vinegar and sesame oil.

  4. Quickly stir well, then turn out on to a dish and serve.
