Pork And Beef Recipes - Beef Rolls Stuffed With Bitter Melon

Ingredients

  • 375g (3/4 lb) sirloin, rump or topside steak

  • 1/3 tsp Chinese five-spice powder

  • 3 tsp peanut oil

  • salt

  • white pepper

  • 185g (6 oz) canned or fresh bitter melon

  • melted lard or oil

  • lettuce leaves

  • 1 heaped tbsp roasted peanuts, crushed

Method:

  1. Cut meat into thin slices, then into strips about 4 cm x 8 cm (1 1/2 inches x 3 inches). Mix five-spice powder with oil, salt and pepper and tub into the meat. Leave for 10 minutes to absorb flavor.

  2. Cut melon into pieces 4 cm x 1 cm (1 1/2 inches x 1/2 inch). Roll a strop of meat around each piece of melon and secure with a toothpick. Grill over a charcoal fire or under a moderate hot griller until cooked through. Turn frequently and brush with a little lard or oil during cooking.

  3. Wash lettuce, dry and arrange on a serving plate. Place cooked meat rolls on top and sprinkle with crushed peanuts. Serve hot or warm as an appetizer or main dish.
